In volleyball there are 3 types of basic kicks. The best thing to do is to find the one that best suits you, although you should have in mind that you probably want to be effective in all 3 serves. Now, we are going to educate you about the basic kicks in volleyball and the steps to follow to learn the technique.

Basic volleyball kicks

As we have already mentioned, we will review the three basic serve genres and explain step by step how to perform them.

Jump serve

The jump serve is a kind of serve where the player increases the power and height using the jump to hit the ball. The movement generated in a jump serve allows the player to add auxiliary power to the ball and make it more difficult for the opposing team to receive it. You will have to be very careful because the referees in volleyball are very demanding and you may get faulty if you do it wrong.

First of all, when we try to do a jump serve, it is important to start multiple centimeters behind the line. Once you are properly positioned, follow these steps:

  1. Put the ball in your left hand.
  2. Throw the ball face up and multiple inches in front of you.
  3. Take an attacking approach, swinging both arms back and forth, then face forward and upward while walking face forward with your left foot.
  4. Jump face up and forward, making sure you're behind the line.
  5. Contact the ball at the highest point you have reached by jumping.
  6. Hit the ball with the palm of your hand and continue the movement with the rest of your arm.

Floating serve

A good floating serve is a tool you should have in your repertoire as a volleyball player. If you play beach flying in a draughty place, this kind of serve can be deadly because it has no turn. The air is in charge of moving it, being able to change its trajectory in a fast way throughout the time that the launch lasts. Certain serves float and then fall quickly, making it extremely difficult to receive the opposing team.

The floating serve is not so simple to explain on paper as it depends a lot on your handling of the ball, but start with these 3 steps until you feel comfortable.

  1. Leave the ball on the palm of your left hand and keep your right arm on guard, just as if you were starting a boxing match.
  2. Raise the ball with your left hand to a convenient height so you can hit with your right hand. Make sure you know the weight and friction of the ball with the air so that it doesn't get too short or too long. At exactly the same time you're lifting the ball, your right arm goes up to acquire the throwing position.
  3. Hit the ball with the palm of your right hand. It has to be a firm, dry blow. It connects only with the palm of the hand, without the fingers participating in the throw.

Face the front (topspin)

In volleyball, a face-off does precisely what its name says, hit the ball from above. This kind of serve has considerably more movement than other serves, but even this way it can be really difficult to supervise due to the speed with which it is produced.

This genre of fighting the front line starts with the pitch. Once you have positioned yourself properly, continue with the next steps for a good serve:

  1. Throw the ball a little higher than when you take a floating serve.
  2. Contact the top of the ball and direct it face down.
  3. Follow the launch trajectory with your arm.
