In volleyball there are 3 types of basic serves. The best thing to do is to find the one that best suits you, although you must have in mind that you will probably want to be effective in the 3 serves. Now, we are going to instruct you which are the basic kicks in volleyball and the steps to follow to learn the technique.
Basic volleyball serves
As we have already commented, we will review the three genres of basic kicks explaining point by point how to perform them.
Jump serve is a kind of serve where the player increases power and height by using the jump to hit the ball. The movement generated in a jump serve allows the player to incorporate auxiliary power to the ball and make it more difficult for the opposing team to receive it. You will have to be very careful because the referees in volleyball are very demanding and it is possible that they will point out faults if you do it wrong.
In the first place, when we try to do a kick-off, it is important to start multiple centimeters behind the line. Once you are properly positioned, continue these steps:
- Put the ball in your left hand.
- Throw the ball face up and multiple centimeters in front of you.
- Make an attacking approach, swinging the two arms face back and then face forward and up while walking face forward with the left foot.
- Jump face up and to the front, making sure you’re behind the line.
- Contact the ball at the highest point you jumped to.
- Hit the ball with the palm of your hand and continue the movement with the rest of your arm.
A good floating serve is a tool you should have in your repertoire as a volleyball player. If you play beach voléi in a place with air currents, this kind of serve can be deadly because it has no turn. The air takes charge of moving it, being able to change its trajectory quickly throughout the time that lasts the launch. Certain serves float and then fall quickly, making it exaggeratedly difficult to receive the opposing team.
The floating serve is not so simple to explain on paper since it depends a lot on your handling with the ball, but it starts with these 3 steps until the moment you feel comfortable.
- Leave the ball in the palm of your left hand and keep your right arm in guard, just as if you were starting a boxing match.
- Raise the ball with your left hand to a convenient height so that you can hit with your right hand. Make sure you know the weight and friction of the ball with the air so that it is not too short or too long. At exactly the same time you’re lifting the ball, your right arm rises to acquire the throwing posture.
- Hit the ball with the palm of your right hand. It must be a firm, dry blow. Connect only with the palm of the hand, without the fingers participating in the pitch.
Face the front (topspin)
In volleyball, a face-off at the front does precisely what its name says, hitting the ball from above. This serve genre has considerably more movement than other serves, but even this way it can be really difficult to supervise due to the fast speed with which it is produced.
This genre of face-off the front begins with the pitch. Once you have positioned yourself properly, continue with the next steps to make a good serve:
- Throw the ball a little higher than when you do a floating serve.
- Contact the top of the ball and direct it face down.
- Follow the trajectory of the launch with your arm.
