With Apple watch, keeping fit is a reality, recent reports have questioned the benefits of fitness trackers, highlighting their imprecision and even claiming that sometimes we gain weight rather than lose weight. Can Apple Watch really help you get in shape? In my experience, what’s in your heart is more essential than what’s in your wrist – but gadgets still have a role to play.

I decided to get in shape, but for the first time in my life, using fitness gadgets to do real tracking. But there was something else that helped me with my results: Nike+ Running. I know from personal experience that when you really get into moving, fitness monitoring systems can be very helpful.

Of course, there are limits to what a fitness monitoring system can do. They will record your exercise habits, but they will not do the exercise for you. That’s where you come in.

If you have an”internal” locus of control, then you think you have control of your destiny, while if it is”external”, you tend to think that what happens to you is someone else’s fault. These tracking systems are not the magic solution, but they can assist you in achieving your fitness goals, provided you are seriously committed and ready to do what is needed.

If the truth is that you don’t really take the change, then a tracking system cannot assist you. And that’s fine. After all, there are a lot of other interesting things you can do with your Apple Watch besides exercise.

These games and prizes are”extrinsic” motivators. It’s bribes to do something you don’t like. Forcing yourself to do things this way can have negative consequences. As the psychologist, Daniel Kahneman explains in his book”Fast and Slow Thinking” that this can lead to”ego exhaustion”, which is a short term lapse in your self-control.

So if you force yourself to run when you know you hate to do it, you can burn certain calories more likely to consume considerably more calories after all the food you’re about to eat in an instant of weakness.

If you don’t like running, why bother? Life is too short and there are plenty of other fitness activities you could be doing at your site. You need to find the type of exercise that’s right for you. Some intrinsic reward you’ll get. And when you’ve found it there’s probably going to be an accessory that can help you get better results. Apple Watch, for example, supports you in walking, running, biking, and rowing. And if cardio is not your thing, there are applications for weightlifting and other sports.

Change comes from within, not from your wrist.

Changing our skill level only happens if we are committed to our goals and ready to do what it takes to achieve them. The fitness monitoring systems will not give us the motivation we need in a magical way. But if you’re really into making changes in your life and find yourself with an exercise that you truly enjoy, these accessories can assist you in sustaining your fitness habit by showing how progress builds up over time.

The record of my careers has become so essential to me that if by the way one of my careers is deleted from Nike+, I feel as if it doesn’t count. And as crazy as this may sound, I end up running a longer distance in less time the next day.

I may be a bit obsessive, but I think this mentality illustrates the extent to which monitoring systems are efficient. The key lies in our inner passions that support us in doing what we truly enjoy.
