With Apple Watch keeping fit is a reality, recent reports have questioned the advantages of fitness trackers, highlighting their inaccuracy and even claiming that sometimes we gain weight instead of losing weight. Can Apple Watch really help you get in shape? From my experience, what’s in your heart is more essential than what’s on your wrist – but gadgets still have a role to play.
I decided to get in shape, more for the first time in my life, using the fitness gadgets to be able to do a real follow up. But there was something else that assisted me with my results: Nike+ Running. I know from personal experience that when you really get moving, fitness tracking systems can be very helpful.
Following your behavior doesn’t mean changing it.
Of course, there are limits to what a fitness tracking system can do. They’re going to record your exercise habits, but they won’t do the exercise for you. That’s where you come in.
As you think, these devices have a huge impact on you. Psychologists talk about locus of control. If you have an “internal” locus of control, then you think that you have control of your destiny, while if it is “external”, one tends to meditate that what happens to you is someone else’s fault. With an external control locus, you can blame your Apple Watch if you don’t achieve your goals instead of accepting responsibility for your resolutions. In a case like this, the clock will turn into your apology.
Are fitness tracking systems good for you?
These tracking systems are not, the magic solution, but they can even assist you in achieving your fitness goals, provided you are seriously committed and ready to do what is needed.
If the truth is that you don’t really take the change, then a tracking system can’t assist you. And that’s good. After all, there are lots of other interesting things you can do with your Apple Watch besides exercise.
But for those who acquire an Apple Watch with a serious desire to progress their physical condition, I believe Apple accessories can assist you with the change.
How can fitness accessories assist?
Frank Sinatra was right when he sang about the ant and the rubber tree plant. Small actions, repeated over time with consistency, can give rise to important changes.
These small actions, like ants, can be quite difficult to see. Sometimes a magnifying glass is needed to understand what is going on. And that’s where the accessories come in. They are like a lens that reveals the relevance of each and every one of the small resolutions you take, showing how your actions pile up in important changes over time.

Ultimately, what motivated me to start using Nike+ was the simple desire to run. It was something I wanted to do. And as I got better at iWatch, I started to enjoy it more and more.
The reward I get for exercising is “intrinsic.” I run for the fact that I like to run, not for the fact that I want to earn points to spend on things or want to compete with friends on an application.
These games and prizes are “extrinsic” motivators. They’re bribes to do something you don’t like. Forcing you to do things like that can have negative consequences. Like the psychologist, Daniel Kahneman explains in his book “The fast and slow thought” that this can lead to “ego exhaustion”, which is a short term lapse in your self-control.
So if you force yourself to run when you know you hate it, you can burn certain calories but you probably consume considerably more calories after all the food you are going to eat in an instant of weakness.
If you don’t like running, why bother? Life is too short and there are plenty of other fitness activities you could be doing on your site. You must find the exercise genre that is most suitable for you. Some intrinsic reward you’ll get. And when you’ve found it, there’s probably going to be an accessory that can help you get better results. The Apple Watch, for example, supports you in walking, running, biking and bogar. And if cardio isn’t your thing, there are applications for weightlifting and other sports.
Change comes from inside, not from your wrist.
Changing our skill level only happens if we are committed to our goals and ready to do what it takes to achieve them. Fitness tracking systems won’t give us the motivation we need in a magical way. But if you’re serious about making changes in your life and find yourself with an exercise you truly enjoy, these accessories can assist you in sustaining your fitness habit by showing you how progress piles up over time.
The registration of my races has become so essential to me that if for some reason one of my races is removed from Nike+, I feel as if it doesn’t count. And as crazy as this may sound, I end up running a greater distance in less time a day later.
I may be a bit obsessive, but I think this mentality illustrates the extent to which tracking systems are efficient. The key is none other than our internal passions that support us in doing what we truly like.
